Only the toilet
If the toilet has a problem flushing and it isn't affecting any other drain, the problem is isolated to the toilet.
Water going up, not down
Run the sink nearest the toilet. If the toilet water rises, it may be a sewer problem. Water backs up to the lowest point — so it may surface in the tub or shower first.
An unusual smell
Plumbing lines are full of gases but are vented to let them out and oxygen in. A new smell can mean a venting problem. Call if you're unsure.
A soggy yard
Suddenly soft ground front or back can mean an underground sewer drain leak — or a septic problem. Pipe breaks are rarer than clogs but need immediate attention.
